What Is Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal works through a series of treatments where the light beam targets the hair at the root beneath the skin’s surface to destroy it. It is a quick, easy and painless treatment that can remove hair permanently for men and women for all areas of the body.

How Laser Hair Removal Works

The light energy from the laser enters the skin and is absorbed by the melanin surrounding the hair follicle. Melanin is naturally present in the hair follicle, when targeted with the laser in the right stage of hair growth, this causes the hair follicle to overheat which damages the bulb, preventing further hair regrowth.

This process is called photothermolysis, and ensures the hair falls out permanently. For best results a course of laser hair removal treatments is recommended to ensure all hairs are caught over the hair cycle.

Following each Permanent Laser hair removal treatment the hairs gradually fall out over the next seven to ten days, leaving the skin smooth and hair free - in other words ‘effective permanent hair reduction’.

What To Expect From Laser Hair Removal

In your consultation we will perform a patch test to check your suitability for treatment. This will also give an idea of how many treatments will be needed depending on the hair follicle reaction from the laser. Once 48 hours have passed you are then able to start treatment.

During treatment some slight redness and bumps are normal after your first treatment. It is advised to cleanse the area treated gently and avoid makeup and lotion, moisturiser and deodorant for the first 24 hours. Dead hairs will begin to shed 5-30 days after your treatment.

How many treatments that are needed will depend on the size of area, skin and hair type. Everybody is different and we can never put an exact figure on how long each individual will take for the hair to be removed. However we always recommend a minimum of 6-8 treatments.

FAQs

Please find answers to the most common questions below.

What happens after a laser hair removal treatment?

There is very little recovery time from Laser Hair Removal, though you may have some redness following the treatment which may last between one to eight hours.

During the following 48 hours, avoid any heat treatments such as saunas and hot showers and avoid exposure to direct sunlight. We recommend using a high SPF on exposed areas.

How many treatments will I need?

Skin type, hair type, hair colour and area of the body all affect the results of the treatment and therefore results will vary between each client.

We always recommend a minimum of 6 -8 treatments to get the best results.

Is laser hair removal painful?

Whilst laser hair removal is not guaranteed to be completely pain-free, it is good to know that there are lots of options that your practitioner can use to make is as close to pain-free as possible. These include a cool-air fan, specially formulated lotions and ice packs during treatment.

What hair removal machine is better Laser (YAG) or IPL?

There is no doubt that lasers are the Gold Standard when it comes to permanent hair removal, they also cost more money to purchase and maintain and are therefore found generally in reputable clinics.

IPL being inferior and cheaper equipment and will take longer and more sessions. IPL can also be prone and easier to burn the client.

IPL treatments are therefore generally cheaper per treatment however more treatments are generally required (Sometimes double or treble the number needed with laser) and will often be more expensive in the long term. Lasers produce faster results with fewer treatments required than IPL.

Can laser hair removal treat all skin types?

Laser treats all skin types, all areas and all genders. It works better on darker hair, is not very effective on red or blonde hair and cannot treat white hair at all (due to their being no pigment in the hair), however another form of permanent hair removal (electrolysis) can be used on that hair (Ask your therapist for details).

Is there anyone that can't have laser hair removal?

We cannot treat laser hair removal to clients who are pregnant, breast feeding or with certain medical prescriptions (Light sensitive drugs) which your practitioner will discuss with you at the time of the consultation. Also client with fair, blonde or grey hair can not be treated. A good alternative for this would be electrolysis hair removal.

Laser treatment can only be performed on a person’s natural skin tone, so sunburn, deep sun tan or fake tan skin cannot be treated and the tan would need to fade before treatment can be performed.

This means that a 4-6 week period needs to elapse following a sunbathing holiday before treatment can recommence.

It is also not advisable to treat if the area of skin to be treated is currently inflamed, such as acne, rosacea or dermatitis.

Are there any side effects from laser hair removal?

Directly after treatment the skin can appear red or raised, similar to goosebumps, which should disappear over a few hours, and the skin may feel itchy.

If the skin feels too hot then cool it down with an ice pack or a bag of frozen peas (Be careful to not cause ice-burn by not leaving it directly on the skin for too long).

Is Laser hair removal available on MyTime membership?
