Microdermabrasion

What Is Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a term used to describe when tiny rough crystals are applied to the skin to buff and polish away the dead cells that clog up the surface layer. It is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of your skin.

How Microdermabrasion Works

The treatment uses tiny crystals that break up the dull, dead skin cells to reveal the smoother, softer skin underneath. The crystals are gently worked into your skin with a handheld device. The treatment promotes the growth of collagen in the skin.

To understand microdermabrasion it is probably helpful to explain the skin’s structure. Your skin is basically made up of two top layers, the outer layer called the epidermis is the protective layer of the skin and the ‘dermis’ is the underlying connective tissue.

Microdermabrasion treatments use a minimally abrasive instrument to gently sand your skin, removing the thicker, uneven outer layer, and has many benefits. This type of skin rejuvenation is used to treat light scarring, discoloration, sun damage and stretch marks.

What To Expect From Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion should just feel like a gritty face massage or minor tugging. If it's uncomfortable, let your aesthetician know. Afterward, you may have some tenderness, swelling, or minor bruising. Remember to wear sunscreen afterward to protect your new skin.

After microdermabrasion, your skin will be pink and feel dry and tight (like sunburn or windburn) for about 24 hours. Use moisturiser and broad spectrum sunscreen. Some types of makeup should not be applied for at least 24 hours after the procedure.

On average, it takes between six to twelve sessions for a person to see drastic results from microdermabrasion. Some people opt to get these treatments every single week for their first three sessions.

Who Microdermabrasion Might NOT Be Suitable For

People who have taken the acne medicine Isotretinoin in the past 6 months may need to wait before having microdermabrasion. They have an increased risk of complications such as scarring. Speak to a doctor about any spot or patch of skin that is growing, bleeding, or changing in any way.
