What Treatments Are Available

Balanced Diet:

Consume a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and proteins, as they are essential for healthy hair growth.

Include foods such as leafy greens, fruits, nuts, eggs, fish, and lean meats to nourish your hair from the inside out.

Gentle Hair Care:

Handle your hair gently to minimise damage. Avoid aggressive brushing or combing, and use a wide-toothed comb to detangle wet hair.

Opt for hair care products that are free from harsh chemicals and sulfates.

Avoid Heat Styling:

Limit the use of heat styling tools such as blow dryers, straighteners, and curling irons, as excessive heat can damage the hair shaft and lead to breakage.

Hair-Friendly Supplements:

Consult with our experts to determine if you could benefit from hair-friendly supplements like biotin, vitamin D, or iron, which can support hair health.

Create a soothing bedtime routine and maintain a consistent sleep schedule to allow your body to rejuvenate and repair during the night.

Protect from Sun Exposure:

The delicate skin around the eyes is particularly vulnerable to sun damage.

Always wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and wear protective eyewear when you're exposed to the sun.

Shielding your eyes from harmful UV rays helps prevent premature aging and pigmentation.

What Causes Age and Sun Spots?

Book Your Free consultation

Understanding the causes of these pigmentation concerns can help you take proactive steps in maintaining healthier and clearer skin.

Sun Exposure

Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun stimulate the production of melanin in the skin, which leads to darkening of certain areas.

Over time, accumulated sun damage can result in the formation of sunspots, especially on areas of the skin exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, arms, and shoulders.

Skin Ageing

As we age, our skin undergoes natural changes that can contribute to the development of age spots.

The skin's ability to regenerate and repair itself diminishes with time, leading to an uneven distribution of melanin and the appearance of pigmented spots.

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations can trigger specific types of hyperpigmentation.

For instance, melasma, a common form of hyperpigmentation, may occur during pregnancy or when using hormonal contraceptives due to hormonal imbalances.

Genetic Predisposition

Some individuals may be more genetically prone to developing age and sun spots than others.

If you have a family history of hyperpigmentation, you may be more likely to experience these skin concerns as well.

Understanding Your Scarring Type

Identifying the specific type of acne scars you have is crucial for creating an effective treatment plan.

During your consultation at Beautology, our experienced aestheticians will assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and create your bespoke treatment plan.

Ice Pick Scars

These scars are deep, narrow, and have the appearance of small, v-shaped holes or pits on the skin's surface. They are called "ice pick" scars because they resemble the marks left by an ice pick or needle.

Boxcar Scars

Boxcar scars are broader and have well-defined edges. They look like shallow depressions with a flat base and steep sides, similar to the scars caused by chickenpox.

Rolling Scars

These scars create a wave-like or undulating texture on the skin due to bands of fibrous tissue pulling the epidermis down. They are more superficial than ice pick or boxcar scars.

Hypertrophic scars

These are raised, thickened areas of skin that form due to an overproduction of collagen during the healing process. Unlike keloid scars, they do not extend beyond the boundaries of the original wound or acne blemish.

"Excellent, offering very personalised care. Having tried several in the area this place wins hands down on the treatments available and the level of service."

Age Spots

These are small dark brown patches, sometimes called sunspots, which tend to develop on sun-exposed areas of skin such as the forehead, around the eyes, or elsewhere on the face or neck. They can also occur on the backs of the hands or the arms.

Melasma

When larger patches of hyperpigmentation occur these are called melasma. In women, they are often linked to the use of hormonal contraception or HRT.Hyperpigmentation can also occur as a result of pregnancy hormones when it is known as chloasma – often referred to as ‘the mask of pregnancy’.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation

This occurs when hyperpigmentation follows on from an area of inflammation on the skin, for example, following a flare up of acne lesions, or eczema.
This results in a patch of discoloured skin. It can also develop after laser treatment or a chemical peel.

Sunburn Freckles

Sunburn freckles, also known as solar lentigines or sunspots, are small, dark spots that can appear on the skin as a result of sunburn or excessive sun exposure. These freckles are more common in individuals with fair skin, as their skin tends to be more susceptible to sunburn.

Understanding The Types Of Acne

Identifying the specific type of acne you have is crucial for creating an effective treatment plan.

During your consultation at Beautology, our experienced aestheticians will assess your skin, discuss your concerns, and create your bespoke treatment plan.

1. Spots, whiteheads, blackheads, pustules and cysts
2. Acne scarring: pits and poor texture
3. Pigmentation
4. Dull, lifeless skin and loss of luminosity

Types Of Pimples

Comedones

Comedones are non-inflammatory acne lesions.

Whiteheads (Closed Comedones): These are small, flesh-colored bumps that form when the hair follicle opening is clogged with oil and dead skin cells. The pore remains closed, creating a white appearance on the skin's surface.

Blackheads (Open Comedones): Blackheads are similar to whiteheads, but the pore is open, and the clogged material is exposed to air, causing it to darken and appear black.

Pustules

Pustules are similar to papules but contain pus at the top.

They appear as red bumps with a white or yellow centre and are often painful and tender to touch.

Papules

Papules are small, red, raised bumps on the skin that occur when the walls of hair follicles break down due to inflammation.

They are the result of the body's immune response to the bacteria trapped in the follicle.

Cysts

Cysts are the most severe form of acne and are characterised by large, painful, and inflamed lesions filled with pus.

They can be deep within the skin and have the potential to cause scarring.
